Hello!
I am happy to be running for the VP of Academics position in the KSA Exec. For those of you that don't know me, I am a proud MMM and Buckethead and have also represented the MMMs on the KSA Board. I am originally from the ATL (Atlanta, GA), attended school at UNC and worked in Atlanta, Germany and North Carolina for 5 years before coming to Kellogg. I am excited to be running for KSA Exec and hope to involve you in the process. In this blog I would like to collect your thoughts on some of the initiatives that I would like to champion.
Specifically, I would like to get your input on "Flexible Finals." Flexible Finals would essentially give you the option to take your final exams early (remotely) just like you are able to do winter quarter for GIM. Of course there are positive and negative aspects of such a program and I would like to hear from YOU about your thoughts!
Very truly yours,
Kennith "Action" Jackson

Flexible Finals, hmmmm??? If this is on the table for next year, then I am all for it. This option would reduce a large amount of the end-of-quarter stress and would help prevent having more than one exam on a given day which will no-doubt increase average grades. This sort of an offering is a perfect extension of the honor code and would help prove the faculty's faith in the students' adherence to it.
My undergraduate institution had flexible finals, and it was great. We're all very busy at Kellogg, and being able to schedule our exam time would be great!
In addition, it would be great to have flexible MIDTERMS, at least during the heavy recruiting seasons. I'm a first year, and the fact that two of my classes had take-home midterms was great. I was able to work the exams into my recruiting schedule without major challenges. All classes should provide this option.
Thanks for your comments! I think that your previous positive experience with flexible finals in undergrad is a good data point for us when deciding on them for Kellogg. I also agree that flexible finals could have the added benefit of limiting the number of exams per day.
I also think that flexible midterms, especially during the heavy recruiting season, could be beneficial. I hope to discuss this topic further with student affairs if elected!
Please initiate a vote on grade nondisclosure at Kellogg!
Thank you for your post regarding grade non-disclosure. Actually the student body voted to change the policy from non-disclosure to disclosure only a few years back.
I think that the top argument in favor of grade disclosure was that since Kellogg is very collaborative and group focused, having grade disclosure encourages strong group participation.
I'd be very interested to hear more about your concerns and thoughts (and those of other students) on the pros and cons of disclosure vs. non-disclosure. Furthermore, if elected, I will explore the issue with the administration to get further understanding of why the policy was changed in the first place.
